Wise Counsel Can Be a Good Thing

Love How Deep

From Brian & Heather Mayer

Hi Reader,

Heather and I are mentoring another couple right now. We've been mentoring couples for the past 12 years. We have seen it all, couples ready to get married, couples who just want to get a tune-up, couples who struggle to communicate, and couples who have had a major betrayal of trust. Through it all we so enjoy when we can see couples connect again with our help.

And honestly, we don't take the credit. We give the credit to God and to the couple for making the decision to come forward and get help. It's often difficult for one or both of the spouses to share something so private but when it happens in a safe place, boy we see the change happen.

Reminds us of this verse:

For lack of guidance a nation falls,
but victory is won through many advisers.
(Proverbs 11:14 NIV)

That brings us to the word of the week. The word of the week is a simple way for you to focus, think about it, meditate on it, include it in your prayers, and apply it to your life.

Couples Word of the Week

Counsel

For the next week, focus on the word counsel. We often think this means professional counseling. And while yes it can mean that, it can also mean many other things. It can simply mean reaching out to friend asking for advice on how to better juggle work life demands. Maybe you're struggling to parent one of your kids, and you want to reach out to one of your parents to see how they dealt with the same issue when it came to you. It might be seeking out Jesus because you have a big decision to make.

Whatever it is big or small, think about going to someone you trust for help. If you struggle to trust others, then I know this can be a big leap so don't do any more than you're comfortable with. Again maybe it starts with a prayer. We know God keeps things between you and him and that often is the best place to start.

Couples Conversation Questions of the Week

Take a few minutes with your spouse at the breakfast table, on the phone, or maybe before bed, answer the questions and then share with each other.

  1. What area of your life would some wise counsel be a good thing right now?
  2. Who might you be able to provide some wise counsel to this week?
  3. Describe a time in your life when you received wise counsel and what it meant to you.
